I am alerting everyone to an excellent article in today's (June 19, 2008) Argus Newspaper, the local paper for Fremont and Newark. This article on 7 year old (by one month) Alisha Chawla titled, "Little princess is deadly with a queen," appeared on the front news page something that has never before occurred in any of the myriad stories over the years on Weibel Chess or one of its players. She is, however, the first player from Weibel, or for that matter Fremont, ever invited to the World Youth Chess Championships. As the reporter said, "It is an unprecedented development for the renowned Weibel Elementary School chess program, . . ." This year's event will be held in Vung Tau, Vietnam from October 19 through the 31. Her parents have already accepted the US Chess Federation's invitation. The article also mentioned two other Bay Area phenomenon's--Nicholas Nip and Tanuj Vasudeva. You can read the article in it's entirety at http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_9630401
You can view a short video of the interview with Alisha at http://www.bayareanewsgroup.com/multimedia/iba/2008/player/?f=chess21
